ProFish grows up and moves! ( 29-01-2012)

On the 1st of December, Profish moved away from its office located within the building of WOW Company to its own 400 m2 facility, still located at the Industrial Area of Naninne (Namur).

Beside the opportunity of having eventually its own structure close to main road access of Belgium and neighbouring countries to our study sites, this moving help us to meet new needs :

  • The 350 m2 workshop deserves storage of our research equipment, like fishing devices, our new working boat on trailer…
  • This spacious place also provides a good capacity to ensure ourselves the infrasound generators maintenance.
  • The arrival of a new team member requires a higher office capacity offered by the two spaces of 20 m2.

A new team member?

Marc Marechal, Bachelor in Agronomy, has recently joined the Profish team. As Project Technician, he is in charge of the maintenance and R&D of infrasound generators and also collects data on sites.

Its presence completes perfectly the team already in place and offers a better work repartition and a more efficient organisation.

Good by 2011, best wishes 2012… ( 29-01-2012)

2011 kept Profish well busy! Discover here in some words a summary of our activities. Also the opportunity for our team to wish you a Profishional year 2012!

Infrasound generators

In last March, Zueblin ordered 14 generators for a GDF-Suez coal-fired power station under construction in Wilhelmshaven. A remarkable trust proof for our system!

Profish grows up in consulting!

We described in one of our last news our mission of eel radio-tracking conducted for EDF Luminus at the Hydropower Station of Lixhe, River Meuse. To be able to reduce fish mortality by turbine passage, Profish is now determining the eel passage repartition between spillways and turbines.

To achieve this, Profish installed automatic receiving stations connected to a battery of underwater and aerial antennas allowing the tracking of 50 eels tagged with radio transmitters.

This radiotelemetry equipment is performing, reliable and much cheaper than the usual systems proposed by main suppliers, and has been used for a long time on the Columbia River (USA). A European Profish exclusivity!

By the end of 2011, half of the tagged eel had already revealed their passage patterns.

Some perspectives for 2012…

  • Profish wants to develop biomonitoring missions. In this framework, Profish will extend its ongoing studies at Lixhe on Atlantic salmon and silver eels in 2012.
  • For the next autumn, our team will also install, as a European Premiere, the automatic Ichtyos fish counter, another performing monitoring tool for fish passes. To be continued…
