Regulations for fish protection…
In Europe, according to the Water Framework Directive (DCE 2000/60/CE), fish free migration is required on all water courses by 2015. Moreover, a recent regulation has been voted by the European Union to protect European eel stocks (N°1100/2007). In the USA, Section 316b of the Clean Water Act also requires that the location, design and capacity of water cooling intakes should incorporate the best available technology to reduce environmental impact.
This legislation implies in practice :
- Changes to obstacles preventing fish moving upstream such as fish ladders beside dams or other impediments to upstream movement;
- Reduction of mortality for fish moving downstream near industrial water intakes by way of fish repulsion systems or fish bypasses

The aim of ProFish Technology is to develop technical solutions to reduce the impact of human activities on fish populations, in compliance with relevant regulations and in the interests of preserving biodiversity.
ProFish Technology is a spin off of the University of Liège (Belgium), where basic research on fish behavioural biology has become a speciality. Through his research work conducted in the Laboratory for Fish Demography and Hydroecology, Damien Sonny has become an expert in fish migration. His research has contributed to the development of an infrasound loudspeaker system which is particularly efficient in deflecting fish away from industrial water intakes.
